Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, its effectiveness depends on which part of the urinary tract is infected. While Macrobid is suitable for some bladder infections, it is ineffective against kidney infections.

Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin): Effectiveness Against Common Bacteria

Nitrofurantoin is effective against the usual bacteria causing urinary bladder infections:

  • Escherichia coli
  • Enterococci
  • Klebsiella
  • Staphylococcus saprophyticus
  • Enterobacter

Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotics can lose effectiveness over time as bacteria evolve defenses against them. Fortunately, Macrobid remains effective against most bacterial bladder infections. In 2017, the United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommended Macrobid as a replacement for Bactrim because a study found only 3% resistance to Macrobid.

Dosage

Nitrofurantoin is taken as an oral tablet in a dose of 100 mg twice a day for seven days. It should be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Did you know?QuickMD can treat a urinary tract infection in the comfort of your own home and prescribe Macrobid online.
