Fenofibrate is used to lower “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, raise “good” high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and, most importantly, lower triglyceride fat in the blood. It does this by increasing an enzyme that lowers blood fats. Lowering triglycerides can prevent development of swelling or inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that produces digestive enzymes. Interestingly, in early research fenofibrate showed some promise against COVID-19, lowering inflammation and disrupting viral replication in human lungs and blood vessels; however as of now there is not sufficient research to support its use in COVID-19 patients.
