Augmentin is a combination of two antibiotics, amoxicillin and clavulanate. Amoxicillin is a member of the penicillin family. Clavulanic acid, or clavulanate, is a beta-lactam, a different type of antibiotic. In combination they treat a broader spectrum of bacterial species than either of them alone. Augmentin is used to treat sinusitis, ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections—to name a few.
