Ezetimibe (Zetia) is a drug used to lower cholesterol levels. It works by lowering the amount of cholesterol absorbed from the small intestine and delivered to the liver. It primarily lowers levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, lowering the risk of heart attacks. Low levels of LDL cholesterol mean arteries are less likely to develop plaque, a substance that causes blockages. When the coronary arteries become blocked, oxygenated blood cannot reach heart muscle in adequate amounts, and the heart is starved for oxygen. Keeping the coronary and other arteries clear allows the heart to receive enough oxygen to perform its work.
