Levetiracetam is classified as an anticonvulsant which stops the spread of seizure activity through the brain. Its mechanism of action is not known. It is used to prevent partial-onset seizures, in which patients are conscious at the time of convulsions, tonic-clonic seizures, in which patients lose consciousness, and myoclonic seizures, which are brief muscle jerks with full consciousness.

Dose–levetiracetam  is available in tablets. The usual dose is 500 to 1500mg twice daily.

Common side effects:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • High blood level of eosinophils (cells associated with allergies and parasites)
  • Irritability
  • Low energy
  • Stuffy nose
  • Irritated throat
