Risperdal (Risperidone)–Information, Dosage, Cost Without Insurance

February 3, 2021

Risperidone is a second generation or atypical antipsychotic medication, used to treat three basic mental illnesses. It is prescribed for schizophrenia, a disease described as splitting away from reality, resulting in hallucinations, strong or inappropriate emotions, bizarre thinking or beliefs, and loss of interest in life. It is used to treat irritability associated with autism, a disorder characterized by withdrawn behavior and difficulty with social skills, speech, and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behavior. It is also therapeutic for bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder, in which patients experience inappropriately wide mood swings. How Risperdal works is not yet understood. It is thought to affect dopamine and serotonin, molecules that help brain cells to communicate with one another. The exact mechanism is not fully understood.
