Topiramate is used to treat seizure disorder and nerve pain, and to prevent migraine attacks. It does this by inhibiting an enzyme known as carbonic anhydrase. Inhibiting this enzyme cuts down on carbon dioxide (CO2) in nerve cells, slowing them down when they are hyperactive. It is also used ‘off-label’ for weight control and certain psychiatric disorders.
