What is a Quantiferon Test?

December 26, 2022

The quantiFERON gold test, also known as the blood tuberculosis (TB) test, detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The test is done when TB is suspected or when an employer requires it for health clearance. Test results may become available within 1-2 days (depending on the lab).

The test is also ordered when the TB skin test has shown a positive reaction, and even in individuals who had their vaccination. If the quantiFERON test is positive, the patient might have either an active or a latent infection. Other tests can determine whether treatment is necessary.

If lung infection is suspected, a chest x-ray, sputum smear and culture, or lung scan can detect it. The bacteria can also attack lymph nodes in the spine, brain, bones, joints, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, intestines, kidneys, bladder, skin, and blood, and can be detected with various other tests when suspected.  It is treated most commonly with the antibiotics isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol. The treatment may take months to be completed.
