Calling 9-1-1 for Patients

  • Call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate threat to the patient’s life (either asserted by the patient or in the best judgment of the physician)
  • If 9-1-1 transfers you to the police, provide the patient’s address and a callback number
  • Be sure to document in encounter notes
  • If the patient has not been referred to a psychiatric facility by the emergency department, QuickMD can offer to do so
  • If applicable, provide a Suicide Prevention Hotline
    • Recommend they talk to a clinical psychologist and go to regular counseling sessions.
