Questions About PrEP

How much does it cost to get a PrEP prescription?

It only costs $75 to get a PrEP prescription, with no hidden fees. If you have insurance, you can submit the encounter summary to your insurer and in most cases all you pay is their co-pay. PrEP is covered by almost all insurance plans. PrEP without insurance can be quite costly.

How many months worth of PrEP can you prescribe to me?

We can prescribe you up to a three-month supply of PrEP.

What does the process look like if I use QuickMD to get a PrEP prescription?

The process is quick and simple and only takes a few minutes. Create an account, then choose if you want to be called by the doctor or if prefer a video consultation. You can also choose a time in the future that best fits your schedule (if you choose to be called, no need to log back in online at the time of the appointment). The doctor will ask you a few questions and then send your prescription electronically to your pharmacy of choice. From the time you sign up to the time the pharmacy receives your prescription usually takes less than 15 minutes.

How long will it take until I can pick up my PrEP prescription?

Your pharmacy will receive the electronic prescription in a matter for seconds to minutes, and depending on the individual pharmacy, it will usually take around ~20-30 minutes for them to get your medication ready for pick-up.

How effective is PrEP to prevent HIV?

PrEP has been shown to be up to 99% effective in reducing your risk for a new HIV infection, if used correctly. It will start to become effective about a week after you start taking it.

How soon after starting it will PrEP become effective?

Usually after about 7 days the blood level of the medication is high enough to be up to 99% effective against new HIV infections. Please note that PrEP does not protect against other STD’s, therefore always practice safe sex, especially with new partners.

Can you order an HIV test?

Yes. We partnered with Quest Diagnostics and we can order an HIV test (and other STD tests) to your closest Quest location.

Will this be confidential and private?

Yes, everything is 100% confidential. Our platform is encrypted and fully HIPAA-compliant and we never sell your information to third parties for profit. Just like an in-person visit, what you share with our doctors is 100% protected. If you agree to communication by email for additional information, please note that emails are not always secure.

Can you start me on PrEP if I have never been on it before?

Yes, we are able to start you PrEP. If you do not have a recent negative HIV test, then we can order one for you to your closest Quest Diagnostics location. Other tests may be advised, e.g. if you have a history of liver or kidney problems.
