Pinworms (Enterobius) are the most common type of intestinal worm in the United States and one of the most prevalent worldwide. They primarily affect children aged 5 to 10 but can also be found in adults. Crowded conditions, such as schools and kindergartens, facilitate the spread of pinworms.
Pinworm Symptoms and Complications
Pinworm infections occur when microscopic eggs are ingested through contaminated food, water, toys, or fingers. These eggs hatch into slender white worms within the digestive system, measuring ¼ to ½ an inch long. Female pinworms exit through the anus to lay eggs on the surrounding skin, causing itching and irritation. This itching often leads to scratching and restlessness, especially at night.
While most patients do not experience severe symptoms, some may suffer from abdominal pain and nausea. Rare but serious complications can include infections within the abdomen, urinary tract infections, uterine infections, and weight loss.
Preventing Pinworms
Prevention of pinworm infections begins with proper hygiene practices:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before eating.
- Clean pajamas, sheets, towels, and washcloths in hot water and dry them with hot air.
- Avoid sharing towels.
- Prefer showers over baths to minimize the risk of spreading eggs.
Medications for Pinworm
Two primary medications treat pinworms: Emverm (Mebendazole) and Albenza (Albendazole)
Emverm (Mebendazole)
- Dosage: Two 100 mg tablets, chewed and swallowed three times a day for three days.
- Mechanism: Prevents worms from absorbing sugar, leading to their starvation and death.
Albenza (Albendazole)
- Dosage: Two 200 mg tablets taken once, with a second dose after two weeks.
- Mechanism: Similar to mebendazole, it disrupts the worm’s nutrient absorption.
